Part of The Blue Series, issued by Blue Note Records.

The CD's subtitle gives you the gist of the thing: "Blue Note Plays the Music of George and Ira Gershwin." Mainly selected from recordings on the Capitol label during the 1950s, this compilation introduced me to several musicians with which I was previously unfamiliar, including Frank Rosolino, Bill Potts, and Bob Cooper.

Subtitled "Blue Note Takes A Commercial Break," this is simply a weak compilation of tunes thrown together because the tracks were - at some point - used in a television ad in the US or UK. This CD might be my least favorite of the Blue Series. Despite the occasional good tune, Blue TV is too inconsistent to work for me as an album. Here's an explanation from the liner notes, written by British DJ/record label exec Dean Rudland:

I started to research which tracks went with which TV ads, but that quickly seemed to be a lot of work so my efforts waned. Then I discovered one the McFerrin tracks was used for a Cadbury ad in the UK with the lyrics altered from "Thinkin' about your body, thinkin' about your face" to "Thinkin' about your chocolate, thinkin' about your taste" and that quickly drained any desire to seek out other ads. You're on your own.

BLUE SERIES MONTH (FEBRUARY, 2025)

Note: I've never found a complete listing of all titles in Blue Note's Blue Series, but over the past month I've cobbled together a list of dozens of releases that I believe to be part of the series (accuracy not guaranteed). If you're interested, I've posted that list over on the informative "Jazz LPs" website: The Blue Series (1991-2002). With a title like Blue Funk, I had high hopes for this compilation - could it possibly be as tasty as Blue '70s or Blue Break Beats? Welp, not quite. It takes a while for this disc to get cookin', but there's some great grooves to be found.

The CD's subtitle "Blue Note Jazz con Sabor Latino" (with Latin flavor) is accurate, but the music here leans heavily Afro-Cuban and boogaloo as opposed to bossa nova, banda, mariachi, conjunto, etc. And that works for me. Pairs quite well with the 2001 Rhino compilation, ¡Saoco! Masters Of Afro-Cuban Jazz.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered this disc also contains some multimedia files. It wasn't labelled as an "Enhanced CD" or "CD-Extra," but I noticed some installation instructions at the end of the liner note booklet. And imagine my further surprise when it all still worked more than a quarter century after release!

The "competition" tab gave UK hepcats a chance to win the entire Blue Series (35 CDs?!?!!) by answering a question:

If they're referencing the song Holy Thursday by David Axelrod, the correct answer would be "no band sampled that track for a song entitled Groove Is In The Heart," right? Or my ear could be missing something. Or maybe they were thinking of of the song Stay in Bed, Forget the Rest by Deee-Lite? Sadly, the deadline for entry was September 30, 1998, so the matter is moot. But that contest doesn't have much to do with the music on today's compilation CD, so never mind. As you were.

A compilation loosely based on New York(ish) song titles. And while it starts strong, it is indeed the mixed bag you'd expect from a theme that considers only titles - cocktail jazz, big band, string arrangements, vocal quartet, bebop, easy listening, soul/R&B, blues, even a Tom Waits cover. Plus the tracks were recorded during an usually wide time span: five decades of the 20th century. The album doesn't really work when taken as a whole, but there's some tracks worth discovering.

BLUE SERIES MONTH (FEBRUARY, 2025)

One of three follow-up releases to Volume 1, which spotlights songs from the Blue Note vaults that have since been sampled for various tracks. Chicago's most excellent record store Dusty Groove writes that

the music here is very strongly oriented in the mode of "breaks," or tracks that were sampled for later hip hop and club recordings -- classic jazz tunes from the glory days of Blue Note that have gone onto live again, thanks to the keen ears and inventive work of more contemporary DJs and producers. After all these years, The Blue Break Beats series still stands as one of the best illustrations of the funkier side of the label..."

Back in the '90s, many of these funky soul-jazz tracks had not yet been released on CD, so they were seeing digital release for the first time on these compilations. As one would expect, there's at least a few bars in each cut that can easily be sampled and repeated, but taken as a whole, it's a groovy compilation.

In the 1970s, Blue Note artists strayed from hard bop and soul-jazz and into more fusionish, funky R&B sounds. Jazz purists hated the move and denounced the label, but it helped keep Blue Note afloat for a while. Whatever the reason, I sure dig this stuff and this is a fine compilation - one of my favorites in the series.

BLUE SERIES MONTH (FEBRUARY, 2025)

Usually the Blue Series focuses on jazzier releases, but this disc is an all-out celebration of original R&B 45s straight from the ol' juke joints. The devil's music. These classic singles were released for the purpose of dancing and letting go on a Saturday night after a long week of 10-12 hour work days. A few instrumentals included but most cuts have vocals with lyrics about drinkin', dancin', lovin', and cheatin'. Lots of the old record labels represented here, including Imperial, Aladdin, Philo, United Artists, Sue, Capitol, 7-11, Colony, and, of course, Blue Note. Plus the best collection of nicknames I've seen in a while.
