As a recovering trumpet player myself, I can tell you that I have played a few of the pieces on this album at churches and weddings, so thanks for the dedication, Wynton.
This is a disc that's long on fantastic performances and short on material. While expertly played there's not much here to write about. The pieces you might recognize are the theme to Masterpiece Theater (Rondeau by Jean-Joseph Mouret) and the popular wedding processional titled The Prince Of Denmark's March by Jeremiah Clarke. The real gem of the CD comes at the end: a spectacular performance of Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto. If I'm being honest, that's one piece on this CD that I couldn't perform, even in my best days, so I'll just sit back and listen to Wynton and his friends totally crush it.
To date, this is last CD of Baroque era trumpet music released by Marsalis. I guess his job as Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center and Music Director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra is keeping him plenty busy. Plus, as evidenced by this disc, he's run low on Baroque material to record. That's a shame because I love to hear Marsalis handle a piccolo trumpet.

One of the main benefits of discovering this site and getting to know the author has been the exposure to and recommendations of jazz and classical music, genres I have always wanted to have a deeper knowledge and appreciation. You continue to deliver on both accounts. If it ain't baroque, don't fix it.
