Since September 2010, this blog has recorded the journey of this music junkie as I attempt to listen to all the music in my CD collection. CDs revisited in their entirety from start to finish - no skipping tracks, no shuffle. Compact Discs only - no vinyl, no tapes, no files.

The Essential Kenny Loggins (2002)

This double disc compilation is a mixed-bag out of necessity - Loggins has had no fewer than 4 career phases: soft rock, (solo and with Jim Messina), '80s soundtrack king, children's albums, and currently, country with the Blue Sky Riders. This disc covers as much of that as it could, with 35 songs covering the years 1971 - 1997, in (roughly) chronological order. I've got some Loggins on vinyl; this purchase was an attempt to get some digital versions of those late '70s - 80's tunes that weren't on the Footloose soundtrack. The fanboy liner notes are rather brief and weak for such a compilation.

This "limited edition" is still readily available.

My Loggins favorites, Kasem-style:
  1. Celebrate Me Home
  2. Your Mama Don't Dance
  3. Danny's Song
  4. Footloose
  5. Don't Fight It
  6. Heart to Heart
  7. I'm Alright
  8. This Is It
  9. Nobody's Fool
  10. Whenever I Call You "Friend"
Personal Memory Associated with this CD:  My family moved in the late summer of 1978 and I started a new school year in a new school. Whenever I Call You 'Friend' peaked around that time and never fails to remind me of that time.

I had the 45 single of I'm Alright. It was the first song that I would listen to over and over, analyzing the arrangement and production gimmicks. It's pretty much a one chord song, it's everything else that makes it good.

  1. Nice Top 10 you've got there, Kid... I've gotta' admit, though, I'm absolutely stunned to see 1988's "Nobody's Fool" at #2... Ahead of "Footloose", no less! If I were a betting man, I'd definitely have bet on "The Foot" being in your Top 5 (fo' sho'). You learn something new every day, I guess.

Now, if I were forced to pick my own favorites from the "Essential K-Log" tracks above? I think it might go a little something like this:

    10) I Believe In Love
    09) Forever
    08) I'm Free (Heaven Helps The Man)
    07) Don't Fight It
    06) Celebrate Me Home

    05) Whenever I Call You "Friend"
    04) I'm Alright
    03) Danny's Song
    02) Heart To Heart
    01) This Is It

*FYI: Dirk's list is not admissible in a court of law, and cannot be used against him... So there!

    1. Dirk ain't nobody's fool! We aren't in full agreement, but at least we're not in the danger zone.

  2. Mark, I had the "I'm Alright" 45 and loved it as you did. I would play it over and over again. It really was a great groove.
