Since September 2010, this blog has recorded the journey of this music junkie as I attempt to listen to all the music in my CD collection. CDs revisited in their entirety from start to finish - no skipping tracks, no shuffle. Compact Discs only - no vinyl, no tapes, no files.

Sade - Lovers Rock (2000)

No offense, Sade, but this album makes me sick. Not long after this album was released, I became suddenly ill (a combination of a sinus infection, allergies, poor diet, stress, and exhaustion, among other possibilities) while taking down Christmas lights in the front yard. Thinking I should rest, I shuffled inside, put on this CD, and fell back on the couch, feeling nauseous. I recovered after a few days, but could never listen to this album again, particularly the opening track, without a wave of nausea coming over me. I'm getting through it today, but that's about all I can tell ya. This could be Sade's best album ever (it won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, Metacritic gives it 78), but I couldn't say since I can't listen to it anymore. The mind works in weird ways, doesn't it?

Peak on the US Billboard Top 200 chart: #3

  1. Wow, that's a psychological anomaly isn't it? I loved this album, and can't listen to it really now because it reminds me of the biggest break-up of my life so far. I'd trade off the associations to "Soldier of Love" any day.

  2. It's a good album and its weird and cool how our minds file certain sounds, smells, and tastes with memories. Can't think of any albums or songs with bad juju for me - maybe it is the mind at work, protecting me from pain, both physical and emotional.
