Since September 2010, this blog has recorded the journey of this music junkie as I attempt to listen to all the music in my CD collection. CDs revisited in their entirety from start to finish - no skipping tracks, no shuffle. Compact Discs only - no vinyl, no tapes, no files.

Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - Under The Covers, Vol. 1 (2006)

Covers? I love covers! Bring 'em on! Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs singing their favorite songs from the '60s and '70s? Sounds great! Waitaminute. You mean they just sing straight-ahead covers without reinterpreting or messing with the arrangements or tempos? Oh. Never mind. Those aren't covers, they're reproductions. At least it sounds like they're having fun recreating these songs.

Sweet and Hoffs created alter egos for this release, calling themselves "Sid and Susie" after playing together in Austin Powers' house band, Ming Tea. That alter ego stuff is an all-around bad idea, just ask Chris Gaines or Sasha Fierce.

Peak on the US Billboard Top 200 chart: #192

Tracks: Since they're reproductions, the best songs here are the well-written ones. Those include covers of The Marmalade's I See The Rain, The Beatles' And Your Bird Can Sing, The Beach Boys' The Warmth Of The Sun, and The Zombies' Care Of Cell #44. Other songs would have been better left off the setlist - this group doesn't have the requisite power to pull off The Who or Neil Young.

Personal Memory Associated with this CD: I bought this used at a store in Houston when I was in grad school there. It's nice to hear Susanna's voice again. And, if the liner note photos are any indication, she is still stunningly beautiful. (Love ya, Susanna, call me!)
