Since September 2010, this blog has recorded the journey of this music junkie as I attempt to listen to all the music in my CD collection. CDs revisited in their entirety from start to finish - no skipping tracks, no shuffle. Compact Discs only - no vinyl, no tapes, no files.

M83 - Saturdays = Youth (2008)

I know nothing about M83. I bought this CD based solely on the following words, found in the January 26, 2009 issue of The New Yorker: "M83, from Antibes, follows in the tradition of Air, Cassius, and Daft Punk. The duo fluctuated between dreamy ambience and feral dissonance earlier this decade and has since embraced the sound and feel of the best of eighties pop. Its latest album, 'Saturdays=Youth,' is a full-color tribute to the heyday of John Hughes flicks." Sounds like something I'd like, right? Too bad it's hit-or-miss. The bad tracks are unlistenable while the good tracks are perfect background music for a rainy, nostalgic Saturday afternoon.

Peak on the US Billboard Top 200 chart: #107 (May 3, 2008)

Tracks: There are a few tracks I like that remind me of '80s music (think Dream Academy meets Depeche Mode with a splash of New Order and U2) - Kim & Jessie, Graveyard Girl, Coleurs, and Highway Of Endless Dreams. I don't care for You Appearing, Dark Moves of Love, or the meandering Midnight Souls Still Remain.

Personal Memory Associated with this CD: None

  1. Did you give the follow-up disc Hurry Up We're Dreaming a spin? Particularly the track "Midnight City"?

M-83 also soundtracked Tom Cruise's film Oblivion.

Did you like the music as featured in the film Drive? "Midnight City" would fit perfectly.

Just curious if you banished them from The CD Project or if they redeemed themselves.

    1. I'll check out their other stuff, but didn't think this album was strong enough to warrant further purchases.
